Tupelo honey, renowned for its exquisite flavor and unique properties, is a natural masterpiece! Tupelo boasts a smooth, buttery taste with hints of floral and fruit notes. This rare variety of honey is a natural choice for diabetics because of it's remarkably low glycemic index.Β

WHEREΒ TUPELO HONEYΒ COMES FROM

Tupelo honey originates from the southeastern United States, notably the pristine river swamps and floodplains of the Gulf Coast region.Β It is harvested from the blossoms of the tupelo tree, specifically the white tupelo (Nyssa ogeche) and the black tupelo (Nyssa sylvatica).Β These trees thrive in the wetlands, but they only flower for a short period each spring.Β

WHY TUPELO HONEY IS SO VALUABLE

Difficult to Produce

The small geographicalΒ areaΒ where Tupelo trees grow and the short window in which they bloom mean that the world's supply of Tupelo honey depends entirely on the annual success or failure of the honey bees in the Gulf Coast floodplains.Β Tupelo blooms are very temperamental and delicate in nature. For their short blooming period, we hope for little wind or rain and no cold temperatures. ExcessΒ of even one of these factors can decimate Tupelo honey production for the year.

Longest Shelf Life

Additionally, Tupelo honey's high fructose content and unique chemical composition give itΒ the longest shelf life of any honey variety.Β Unlike many other types of honey, Tupelo has a significantly higher fructose-to-glucose ratio. Fructose is a natural sugar that resists crystallization, which means that tupelo honey naturally remains in a liquid state for a much longer period when compared to other honeys.

Remarkably Low Glycemic Index

Tupelo honey can be a favorable option for diabetics due to its unique sugar composition. It contains a higher proportion of fructose compared to glucose, resulting in a lower glycemic index (GI). The lower GI means that tupelo honey has a slower and steadier impact on blood sugar levels compared to other sweeteners with higher glucose content. This can help prevent rapid spikes and crashes in blood sugar, which is crucial for managing diabetes.Β Its natural sweetness also means you might need less of it to achieve the desired level of sweetnessΒ on your plate!

Incredible Flavor

Whether you're a honey enthusiastΒ or a casual consumer, everyone notices the unique flavor of Tupelo honey! The taste is buttery, the texture is smooth, and the citrus floral flavor hits perfectly on the back of the tongue.Β It's the ideal compliment to a biscuit, a cup of tea, or just about anything that could use a little extra something sweet. Our family uses this delicious variety of honey to flavor our homemade ice cream every summer and we can't think of anything that tastes better than that!
